Clear the Shelter is a nationwide program which for ONE DAY individuals can select a cat or dog that would make a good family member at a very low cost, FREE. This event will only be happening at our Hinsdale Animal Hospital and Oswego Animal Hospital locations.

The details are:

  • On Saturday August 17 any cat or dog 1 year old or older at the Hinsdale Animal Hospital or the Oswego Animal Hospital  (only) is eligible to be adopted for a ZERO adoption fee.
  • County rabies tag fees still apply.
  • Our usual adoption requirements will apply. Come prepared to adopt as the free pets will go to the first ones who meet the qualifications below:
  • Must be 21 years of age or older to adopt a cat, 23 years of age or older to adopt a dog.
  • Must provide a copy of your lease agreement or association by laws if you live in an apartment, condo or townhouse
  • Must provide documents/receipts that specify your cat or dog’s immunizations/required tests are current. If you know they are not current, bring the animals with you and can have them updated by the animal hospital that houses HSP. See below for Vaccination/Testing requirements.
  • All adults in the household must be present and co sign the adoption agreement.
  • All your currently owned dogs/cats must be spayed or neutered.

Each free adoption includes:

  • Spay or neuter surgery
  • Vaccines
    • Rabies
    • Bordatella (Dogs)
    • Canine Influenza (Dogs)
    • Canine combination vaccine for Distemper, Adenovirus type 1 & 2, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, and Coronavirus (DHLPPC – Dogs)
    • Feline combination vaccine for Distemper, Rhinotracheitis, Calici, and Chlamydia (DRCC-Cats)
  • Fecal test
  • Deworming
  • Heartworm test (dogs)
  • Leukemia test (cats)
  • Capstar flea treatment
  • Microchip identification implant

Vaccines/Tests required to qualify for free adoption

IF ADOPTING A DOG:

DOGS THAT CURRENTLY LIVE IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD must be current on the following vaccinations/tests before you can adopt a DOG:

  • Rabies – mandated by law.
  • Distemper – Protects against Distemper and 5 other diseases potentially fatal to your dog.
  • Fecal test – tests for intestinal parasites dangerous to your pets and YOU.
  • Bordetella – protects your pet from URI (last 6 mos)
  • Heartworm test in the last year

CATS THAT CURRENTLY LIVE IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD must be current on the following vaccinations/tests before you can adopt a DOG:

  • Rabies – mandated by law.
  • Distemper – Protects against Distemper and 3 other diseases potentially fatal to your cat.
  • Fecal test – tests for intestinal parasites dangerous to your pets and YOU.

IF ADOPTING A CAT:

CATS THAT CURRENTLY LIVE IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD must be current on the following vaccinations/tests before you can adopt a CAT:

  • Rabies – mandated by law
  • Distemper – Protects against Distemper and 3 other diseases potentially fatal to your cat.
  • Fecal test – tests for intestinal parasites dangerous to your pets and YOU.
  • Leukemia test or vaccination.

DOGS THAT CURRENTLY LIVE IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD must be current on the following vaccinations/tests before you can adopt a CAT:

  • Rabies – mandated by law
  • Distemper – Protects against Distemper and 5 other diseases potentially fatal to your dog.
  • Fecal test – tests for intestinal parasites dangerous to your pets and YOU.
